The third album of Kilshannig is a live-CD.
Here, the atmosphere of the traditional Irish music and the enthousiasm
of the band show up very well. |

In 2006, three concerts of
Kilshannig were recorded in small theatre-churches in the province of
North-Holland. 15 tracks were selected, together giving a good overview of
the wide variety of Irish music and the interpretation put on it by
Kilshannig. In short:
a combination of Irish feeling and musical quality for almost 80 minutes!
The album has attracted international attention, and it has been
reviewed by DJ's and leading folk journals. Below you'll find some
reactions; see also "Kilshannig in the

“Amazingly authentic Irish traditional music from this Dutch quintet.
Surprisingly, it’s the vocals, sung in English of course, that
impressed me the most! The instrumentals are played with fiery spirit.
The live recording enhanced the excitement for me.
The notes in the insert booklet are excellent! Very lucid and
informative. Puts the music in excellent historical perspective.
In all ways, a satisfying recording form an unexpected source!”

"My first hearing of the entire CD confirms my earlier impression from
listening to sound clips at your web site – Kilshannig compares very
well with native Irish bands. There is a sensitivity and depth of
emotion in the song tracks, even the ‘drinking’ songs, that elevates
them above the ordinary. I wish I could have been at some of those live
performances! The delicacy of the title track makes it an absolute
stand-out; the sentiments of the old shanty are far better expressed in
your rendering of the Mary Black model than the table-thumping pub song
more often heard. I feel the same way about ‘Loving Hannah,’ there is a
wistfulness about it that is palpable. And who, in these times of
conflict, would not be moved by ‘My Youngest Son’ from the pen of Eric
Bogle? Kilshannig’s instrumental tracks are appropriately lively, crisp,
and well turned out. Finally, although the CD itself could have
benefited from tighter control of audio levels in its production, the
variable quality of the audio from your various live venues does not
distract."
"Overall I rate ‘On Holy Ground’ a must-have CD. Hearing the choice of
ballads and tunes selected from your live performances for this disc
leave me wondering what other gems were not included!"

Kilshannig
our chief delight
|
| After the band changed its name
into Kilshannig, they recorded "our chief delight". This time
they were inspired during a short stay in spring 1996 in Killinaboy, at
the fringe of the Burren area, where they met Pat Cooksey and Tommy
Peoples. The CD contains 14 tracks, varying from melancholic ballads to
rousing tunes.

Named after the small hamlet Cil Seanaigh on the Dingle peninsula in
County Kerry on the south-west of Ireland, Kilshannig aren’t exactly
your typical Celtic band. Every member of the group hail from
somewhere in the province of North Holland.
While the Netherlands aren’t exactly renowned for its Celtic music,
Kilshannig do a good job of pulling it off. You aren’t going to hear
anything extremely innovative in their playing but with that said they
do a fine job of standard traditional music from Scotland and Ireland.
While their instrumental tracks are well done, I find that it is on
the songs that this group excels with some wonderful harmony singing.
If you are a lover a traditional song you will be delighted with their
versions of the well worn classics, such as “Jack Of All Trades”, “The
Raggle-Taggle Gipsy”, “Carrickfergus”, “The Bonnie Ship The Diamond”
and “Will You Go Lassie Go”. They also do a version of Eric Bogle’s
poignant anti-war song “My Youngest Son Came Home Today”, which is
given fine treatment by the band. The key to the success of Kilshannig
is that they make music that is their “Chief Delight” and the fact
that they take great delight in making music is clearly displayed on
this recording.
